FAQs

Should I choose a woodburning or multifuel stove?

There are broadly two types of stove – dedicated woodburners, or multifuel stoves that can burn both wood and solid fuel.

A dedicated woodburning stove will have a flat fuel bed, as logs burn better on a bed of ash, with air coming from above to burn the fuel.

Solid fuel or smokeless fuel requires more air flow from beneath the fuel bed to burn efficiently, so a multifuel stove will have an open grate to allow air flow from beneath the fuel bed. The open grate allows ash to fall into the ash pan below to maintain this air flow, and for easy cleaning.

What is a DEFRA approved stove?

A DEFRA approved stove is an appliance that has been rigorously tested to meet the stringent requirements to enable it to be installed in a Smoke Control Area.

If you live in a large town or city in the UK, you likely live in a smoke control area. Check your location on the DEFRA website to find out if you are affected.

All the Bristol Stove Co. range of stoves have been tested and approved by DEFRA for use in Smoke Control Areas.

What size stove do I need?

In most modern, insulated homes, a 4-5kW stove will be perfect for your living room. This ensures that you can burn the stove hot, which improves it’s efficiency, without overheating the room. A stove that is too big for the space will encourage you to burn it slowly, which will make it difficult to keep the glass clean and encourage a build up of tar and creosote in the chimney.

For larger rooms or open plan areas, a 5-8kW stove may be a better choice to maintain a cosy heat throughout the space. Consider the 7kW Explorer stove or the Clifton 8 if you’re looking for a larger heat output.

What is the difference between inset and freestanding stoves?

A freestanding stove is the most common type of stove, and will generally sit on a hearth either within a fireplace opening or stand independently in the room for a more contemporary look.

An inset stove is built into a wall or fireplace, which creates a streamlined look and can be a space-saving solution. Inset stoves can be just as efficient as freestanding stoves, despite being built into the wall with less exposed surface area. The Explorer range of inset stoves are all energy efficiency rating Class A+ for high efficiency and a sleek, modern style.

Why should I upgrade to a new log burner?

Older log burners or open fires are typically only about 25% efficient. This means that around 75% of the energy produced by the fire goes straight up the chimney. Modern stoves such as the Explorer and Clifton ranges are up to 85% efficient, meaning that only around 15% of the energy goes up the chimney. This is a significant difference and means that you will enjoy more warmth from every piece of fuel you burn.
